If you've set a goal to shed a few pounds and have narrowed your exercise choices to riding a bike or running, you've chosen wisely. These two activities are among the fastest ways to burn calories and, by extension, lose weight. Either activity can contribute more greatly to weight loss than the other, depending on your exercise approach. Exercise isn't the only area you must consider when attempting to lose weight -- your diet also plays a pivotal role.

Focus on Duration and Frequency

The form of cardiovascular exercise you choose in your mission to lose weight won't automatically help you meet your goals. Riding a bike or running can each burn calories faster than the other -- theoretically making either activity better for weight loss -- depending on the intensity with which you exercise. A 190-pound person burns about 690 calories in an hour of biking around 13 mph and 863 calories in an hour of biking around 15 mph. The same person burns about 690 calories running for an hour at 5 mph and 863 calories running for an hour at 6 mph.

Make Time for Results

Don't expect to witness a weight-loss miracle after a single bike ride or run. Weight loss is a slow journey -- a safe rate is just 1 to 2 pounds per week -- that requires ample time devoted to cardiovascular exercises. Because biking and running are vigorous-tempo activities, adults who use either exercise in an attempt to lose weight should devote at least 150 minutes a week to the workout.
