A flat stomach is the envy and desire of most men and women and requires commitment to regular exercise and nutritious eating routine. In addition to living a healthy lifestyle, there are a few tips and tricks that can help give the appearance of a flatter tummy as well as potentially speed up the rate of weight loss and tummy toning for a slimmer stomach.

Drink More Water

Water can flatten the belly by assisting the digestive system to move and flush out excess waste. Poor digestion, eating too much food or too many fibrous foods can lead to a distended, bloated belly and constipation. Water helps move food along in the digestive passage to allow for elimination. It also decreases bloating by flushing out excess water that the body holds onto when it isn't getting enough fluids. Aim to drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day including herbal teas, broths and high-water fruits such as plums and watermelons.

Little Things Add Up

Small tricks you do throughout the day will help you gain a flat belly with long-term success. Eating one to two healthy snacks between meals can help take the edge off hunger levels, preventing you from getting too hungry and over-eating foods that are high in fat and sugar at mealtimes. Chewing food slowly can also slim you down since it gives the body time to recognize when it is full and time to stop eating. Finally, monitor portion sizes as eating too much in one sitting can make you bloated, leading to a bulging, uncomfortable belly. Stick to recommended serving sizes and put food on a plate or in a bowl versus eating straight from the carton, tin or fridge.

Sleep To Slim

Getting the proper amount of sleep can help you slim down your belly. A lack of sleep causes the stress hormone cortisol to rise in the body which, when in excess, is associated with abdominal obesity in men and women, according to Rush University Medical Center. Aim for seven to eight hours of restful sleep per night by turning in an hour earlier than usual.

Think Tall

Your posture can make the difference between a flabby and flat tummy. Slumping causes the shoulders to round, the lower back to lose it's natural curve and belly muscles to relax, making belly rolls more prominent. In contrast, an exaggerated posture such as sticking the chest out too far can decrease the natural curve in the lower back causing the stomach to protrude. Achieving a neutral pelvic position allows the back to assume it's natural curve and belly muscles to contract which flattens the tummy. Stand with shoulders underneath your ears, hips over ankles and belly muscles gently pulled in towards the spine.

Add Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, ACV, may help you flatten your stomach and improve digestion. According to "Apple Cider Vinegar: Miracle Health System," ACV aids digestion and flushes out waste by killing off harmful bacteria in the intestines. Add a tablespoon of the vinegar to salads, steamed and roasted veggies and mixed with lemon and olive oil as a dressing over chicken or fish. Taking a tablespoon of ACV with a glass of room-temperature water in the morning can also speed up digestion to allow for bowel movements and subsequently a flatter stomach.
